Le Barre de Monts, a picturesque village in the Vendee famous for oyster farming, lies on the mainland coast across from the Ile de Noirmoutier. It's commonly referred to as 'the gateway to the islands' as you can catch the ferry here to the Ile d'Yeu, departing from the pier at Fromentine.

Le Barre itself has some wonderful beaches along with many lovely forest walks through the 600 hectares of pine and evergreen oak forest. To the west is the Passage du Gois, a causeway between the mainland and the Ile de Noirmoutier that is only passable at low tide.

Located just a few kilometers from our campsites in Saint Jean-de-Monts, this village is worth a visit.

What is there to do in La Barre de Monts - Fromentine?

Visit the Oyster Farms

Located at the foot of the Vendée islands, La Barre de Monts-Fromentine is a small fishing village full of charm and French authenticity. This village is famous for its salt marshes and the oyster farms, which can be toured.

Salt Marshes

The Breton-Vendée marsh covers no less than 45,000 hectares, including 1,200 in the commune of La Barre de Monts-Fromentine! It may sound like a strange trip, but a visit to the Le Daviaud eco-museum is actually quite fascinating!

Pont Neuf

The small port of Pont Neuf is a lovely place to spend an early evening. Admire the authentic fishing boats in the harbour and take the opportunity to find a restaurant to your liking in the vicinity.

With its four beaches, La Barre de Monts-Fromentine is full of water sports activities where there are sailing schools, sand yachting, kite carts, kayaking... The following beaches are perfect for relaxing: Fromentine, La Grande Côte, la Bergère, and Les Lays.

Horse riding

This area of the Vendee is great for all kinds of sports, including horse-riding. Take a trek through the woods to the beach, early morning or late afternoon.

The forests of Pays de Monts

If you enjoy hiking or mountain biking, then head to the forests in the Vendée, perfect for trail rides and walks. The forest of Monts extends from Fromentine to Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez.

If you enjoy longer distance cycling then take the family-friendly cycle paths and discover the twenty kilometer route from our Bois Masson campsite and our Bois Dormant campsite, to the town of La Barre de Monts-Fromentine, enjoy some oysters and a cider and head back!

For the more adventurous among you, you can even take take the road bridge directly to the island of Yeu at low tide or take the Noirmoutier bridge to venture to the island of Noirmoutier.

The island of Yeu is great for lots of activities, like kayaking, fishing or cycling. You can also take a boat trip to tour the island and enjoy its beautiful coastal landscapes.

By staying at our two campsites in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, you will discover a fun seaside town, great for the family, especially teenagers. There's a lively town centre and long stretches of beaches, great for surfing and body-boarding.
