Cycling holidays in France

The French do cycling well. Unlike the UK, there are miles and miles of dedicated cycle paths which criss-cross across France, as well as along much of the coast, in particular the west coast of France. There are the famous cycling routes you can explore by bike, such as the Vélodyssée bike route is a 1,200km Atlantic Coast cycle route that stretches from Brittany to the south coast, and the EuroVelo 6 route, which crosses Europe to the Black Sea.

For the more relaxed cycling fans, you'll discover miles of easy, family friendly cycle paths along the coast, easily accessible from many of our Siblu holiday parks. These dedicated cycle routes tend to be very well maintained, with 'cycle stations' at various intervals - places equipped with bike tools and air pumps for your to maintain your bike.

Where to cycle in France

We'll highlight the serious cycling routes below, but for the relaxed family bike rides we would highly recommend the west coast of France, from the Vendee down to the Charente Maritime. All along the coast here you'll discover great cycle paths that are perfect for exploring as well as having an easy route to the coast.

If you're a fan of mountain biking, then of course head to the French Alps. Our Siblu holiday park Les Rives de Condrieu, located close to Lyon and the Alps is in the perfect spot for either road or mountain biking.

For mountain biking cross country, then you could head to Brittany or the Landes region for woodland bike trails, or across to the Mediterranean coast for the Grand Traversée du Massif Central (GTMC). This 718 km route runs from Clermont Ferrand to Sète, just south of Montpellier, traversing across all types of terrain. You can reach this route from our holiday park near Monpellier, Le Lac des Reves.

Famous French cycling routes

The famous Vélodyssée bike route is a 1,200km Atlantic Coast cycle route that stretches from Brittany to the south coast, with several stages passing close to Siblu holiday parks. They include a 26km section from St-Brévin-les-Pins to Pornic (close to Pierres Couchées); a 9km stretch from Royan to Soulac-sur-Mer (close to Les Charmettes, La Pignade, Bonne Anse Plage and Mer et Soleil), and from Arcachon to Biscarosse Plage through the Landes forest (close to La Réserve and Domaine de Soulac).

The ViaRhôna will eventually extend from the shores of Lake Geneva to the beaches of the Mediterranean along the Rhône. It's a route of 815km, rich in exceptional panoramas, that passes by les Rives de Condrieu.

The EuroVelo 6 route, just 15 minutes by bike from Domaine de Dugny, crosses Europe to the Black Sea, and follows rivers as magical as the Rhine, the Danube and the Loire. Follow the route to visit Tours, Saumur, and chateaux including Chambord and Chenonceau.
